Here is some background:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Australia, the\nmeetings and events sector contributes an estimated $17.36 billion a year to\nthe national economy, generating 116,000 jobs. But the net worth to the nation\nof events far exceeds their hard dollar value. These events play a pivotal role\nin Australia\u2019s economic prosperity, by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boosting the\nvisitor economy through domestic and international visitation.<\/li><li>Facilitating\nsmall business growth by connecting buyers and sellers,<\/li><li>Knowledge sharing is leading to innovation and business\ncollaboration.<\/li><li>Providing a\nplatform for international trade and investment.<\/li><li>Promoting and\nshowcasing Australian expertise and innovation to the world.<\/li><li>Attracting global\nleaders and investment decision makers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cevent\u201d\ncovers a broad spectrum of meanings. An event may be an adjunct to a trade\nshow. For others, an event can be a\nstand-alone entity. Still others might put educational sessions \u2013 seminars,\nspeaker series, or key opinion leader dinners \u2013 in the event category. &nbsp;\u201cEvents\u201d\nis a collective term referring to association conventions, corporate and government\nmeetings, exhibitions and incentive travel reward programs. The event may be as small as 15 business people in\nan off-site workshop, through to a large international scientific meeting\nattracting 10,000 delegates Business events produce the highest daily yield of\nany sector of the tourism industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support\nof the Australian government, Ernst &amp; Young studied the events industry in\nAustralia and found that in 2013-14, over 37 million people attended more than 412,000\nbusiness events in Australia. Exhibitions, (trade shows, expos, or events) were\nconsidered a subset of the event industry for purposes of this study. Exhibitions can be Business-to-Business (B2B),\nBusiness-to-Consumer (B2C) or a combination of the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ernst &amp;\nYoung report also learned that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There were 2,157\nexhibitions staged in Australia, attracting 9.3 million visitors and over\n65,000 exhibitors.<\/li><li>Exhibition\nvisitors spent $2.3 billion in Australia.<\/li><li>Exhibitors spent\n$643 million in Australia.<\/li><li>Exhibition organizers\nspent $137 million in Australia, generating $88 million in value add.<\/li><li>Total direct\nexpenditure from exhibitions was $3.1 billion, contributing a direct value add of $1.5 billion and\ngenerating over 21,000 jobs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally,\nAustralia ranks 16 among all countries in numbers\nof exhibitions. In the APAC region, Australia ranks 4, surpassed only by China,\nJapan, and Korea. International visitors spend 1 in 5 dollars attending\nbusiness events in Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing\nglobal recognition and reputation of Australian business events has led to an expanding export market for events. Australian State Governments have\ninvested roughly $5.7 billion in business event infrastructure both directly\nand through public-private partnerships. These convention and exhibition centers\nare recognized as world-class and have the potential to attract prestigious\nevents and position Australia as a valuable business event destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s\ncurrent goals for the industry are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Build global awareness of Australia as a sustainable business events destination.<\/li><li>Deliver a clear brand for business events in Australia and a marketing toolkit.<\/li><li>Deliver trade-marketing programs that bring buyers face-to-face with sellers.<\/li><li>Provide industry access to research and market insights.<\/li><li>Provide industry leadership to promote the ongoing development of a sustainable events sector.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There remains an untapped potential for more conferences hosted in Australia to boost world best-practices in the country, and to encourage innovation across a wide variety of industry, professions, government, and academic life. Because there is a single governing\nbody for the entire continent and because trade fairs contribute so much to\nAustralia\u2019s economy, there is intense political pressure for government support\nfor the industry. Particularly for US exhibitors and their suppliers, finding a\nshow in Australia on their schedule means investing some time in understanding\nthe country and its practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are a few interesting facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Population approximately\n23,261,702<\/li><li>Main language:\nEnglish<\/li><li>Total area of Australia is 7.7 million square kilometers.\n<\/li><li>Australia is the\nworld\u2019s largest island &#8211; but smallest continent.<\/li><li>Australia is also\nthe only continent that is governed as a single country.<\/li><li>Sydney =\npopulation 4.3 million.<\/li><li>Melbourne =\npopulation 4 million<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the intense\ngovernment support, the state-of-the-art facilities, the fact that English is\nspoken, and that Australia is an exciting destination, more and more exhibitors\nare finding that their show schedules include events in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nexhibiting style is a blend\nof American and European \/ UK styles. When you exhibit anywhere in Australia,\nyou use a major contractor for both shell\nscheme systems and custom exhibits. Electrical services will by provided by the contractor while rigging is provided by a supplier appointed by the\norganizer. Move in\/move out times are tight, and there are strict regulations\nfor issues such as fire safety.&nbsp; All\nstands and plans need to be approved by the venue, a process facilitated by the\norganizer. Rental carpet is eco-friendly but colors are limited. Needle punch\ncarpet like that found in the US is available but expensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many materials\nfrom the US, UK, and Europe are not available in Australia due to the (currently)\nsmaller size of the exhibition market. Signage is expensive to produce. On the\nother hand, there is no union involvement or drayage when working in Australian\nvenues. When an exhibitor orders a space-only stand, in most cases they only\nget a concrete floor. They need to source power and lighting, audio visual, and\nfurniture, among other things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For larger shows,\na freight forwarding company is generally\nappointed. Smoking is not permitted onsite in any of the Australian exhibition\nvenues. The contractor can usually take orders onsite for additional furniture,\npower and lighting and AV, but there are significant late order charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia, with\nits seven major trade show venues, is quickly becoming a desirable location for\nglobal trade fairs. Because there is a single governing body for the entire\ncontinent and because trade fairs contribute so much to Australia\u2019s economy,\nthere is intense political pressure for government support for the industry.\nThere is true government support for the\nindustry, and because of that, there are practices that make it easy for global\nexhibiting. For example, although visitors need a visa, Australia uses an\nelectronic process that tags to your passport number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, there\nare thousands of attendees and exhibitors at Australia\u2019s international trade\nshows, providing the potential for robust business opportunities. Invest in a\nbadge scanner to gather attendee information so that contact information is\navailable after the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia is casual.\nThere is no need for strict formality here, like in other cultures. Using first\nnames is perfectly acceptable. Greet with a \u201chello\u201d or \u201chow are you?\u201d\nfirst.&nbsp; Business card exchange is also\ncasual; there is no formal routine as\nthere is in many APAC countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Punctuality is\nimportant. In making a presentation \u2013 avoid hype, bells and whistles, or any\nexaggeration. Stick to the facts and be direct. Don\u2019t go into too much detail. Dress is always a question anywhere you go.\nAustralia it\u2019s no different. In Melbourne and Sydney, dress is more conservative, business professional. Suits for men\nand dresses or suits for women. In\nBrisbane and some of the beach areas, casual clothing is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A few other things to remember about the exhibiting environment: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local labor is\npreferred. For example, much like the U.S., there are very strict labor rules for installing and dismantling your stand\nin Australia. Certain people have jurisdiction in certain areas (usually by\nstate). There are some reciprocal laws to allow workers to work in different states, but permits are required. Try to pull\nfrom the local labor pool to ensure workers are licensed to work at the venue or to work with your exhibit\nhouse and their labor teams. There are also many restrictions on non-Australian\nresidents working in Australia. Make sure you always check with the local\nAustralian government for up-to-date\nrules. Don\u2019t assume you can just show up and do your own thing. Make sure you\nor your exhibition company submit all appropriate permits and forms to the\nvenue or organizer for approval before beginning work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common exhibit\nconstruction includes pillow case fabrication, shell schemes with enhancements\nor. custom builds. A custom build and burn is standard\npractice. Rental exhibits (especially those that use extruded aluminum systems)\nhas become popular. Just as in the U.S., many exhibitors use hybrid exhibits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While build and\nburn is still a very popular choice among\nexhibitors, more and more companies are finding value in building and storing\nan exhibit for two or three years, depending on how many shows they do and the\nlocations on the continent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Materials used in\nAustralia are very similar to those used in the US. These include wood,\nlaminate, system structures, pre-fabricated laminated wood products, plastics,\nand so on. Fabric and graphic production is\nalso on a scale like that of the US. Australians prefer a raised floor.\nMelamine is often used instead of carpet, but carpet is available if you\nprefer. Usually it is not as thick as the carpet\nin the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are the\ndocumentation issues important&#8211;strict penalties are attached for\nnon-compliance&#8211;there are health and safety laws that must be observed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotions are not important in Australian business. Many companies\nin the US tend to market using an emotional appeal (for example, the cute baby\nin the commercial). That approach doesn\u2019t work in Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut the small\ntalk. In the US we are prone to making conversation and getting to know someone\nbefore we ask for the business. We try to\nbuild a bond, a connectin.
